2025 Color of the Year: Mocha Mouse Will it Make an Entrance in Fashion?

Each year, Pantone releases a "Color of the Year". The company has been releasing 'colors of the year since 1999'. Over the years, the featured color serves as a highlight in many industries, but especially interior design and clothing design. Often, it will become a color you see more and more.

This year, 2025, the Color of the Year is Mocha Mousse. It is a gorgeous color, but as someone who has bought clothes for a clothing store for years, I have to say, there hasn't been much emphasis on brown, or at least not more than normal. In fact, the Spring 2025 color palette released by clothing designers is not out of the norm from normal Spring colors, but maybe with a softness to it. Brown seems to own the Fall and Winter color palette every year, no matter if it is a "color of the year" or not.

Having said all of that, it had me wondering if we will see brown in more designs as the year progresses and then experiment with different complementary color offerings.

2025 Pantone Color of the Year

I am a stylist who is big on making statements with color. An outfit may be VERY simple, but you can really make it pop simply by adding a complementary color. So I played with it for a little bit here in the store. My personal favorite color combination with brown is pink. Right now, we have the prettiest turquoise earrings that make it all sing.

My next favorite color to wear with brown is blue. Interestingly enough though, the opposite of blue is yellow and that can be tricky with brown hues. As a result, I found myself changing out the yellow for gold and then it makes the contrast I strive for when I'm building outfits.

As I continue to research the upcoming seasonal trends and buy for the store accordingly, I will be very interested to see how much impact this Color of the Year will have on fashion. My prediction....it won't. Through the years, I've learned, this soft shade of brown is too difficult to wear with multiple skin tones. The brown either has to be more rich or it has to be much more neutral to work across many designs.

In the meantime, I found some amazing color palette inspirations from https://thenotsodramaticlife.com/, who is a lady who has a bog about quilting. She often talks about color combinations when quilting. It's fascinating really. The combinations she cam up with for the seasons really makes me excited. What are your thoughts?
